Drivers get a lesson in safety

Think of Me” school-zone safety campaign aims to educate drivers in South Surrey.

As part of the “Think of Me” school-zone safety campaign – a joint effort between Surrey RCMP, ICBC and the Surrey School District – RCMP members and community policing volunteers were outside H.T. Thrift Elementary School Tuesday afternoon, pulling over drivers who exceeded the 30 km/h school-zone speed limit.

Drivers were then handed a hand-drawn speeding “ticket” – designed and drawn by an H.T. Thrift student – as a reminder to slow down when in school zones.

“This is a great opportunity to involve students, school staff and parents to raise awareness about the vigilance we as drivers must have when travelling through school zones and everywhere else,” said Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet.

While the campaign aims to educate drivers, on a few occasions Tuesday, real tickets were also issued.
