He’s been preaching the numbers for awhile now.
Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk said that while most people think it’s at Christmas time that there are more impaired drivers on the road, it’s actually when the weather is warmer.
“It’s a pattern I’ve talked about the last couple of years, it’s the summer when there are more impaired drivers out there,” said Molendyk.
With the official start of summer just around the corner, local police have already been busy dealing with people drinking and driving.
Last week, police impounded 10 vehicles.
Two were from impaired drivers, and two were from motorists who had a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.08.
In the same time frame, police issued four 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions (IRPs) and two three-day IRPs.
They also handed out two 24-hour driving prohibitions.
“We’re coming up to the July long weekend and that carries through until September, people go to the beach because the weather is warmer, or they attend barbecues,” said Molendyk.
“We do see an increase in impaired drivers through the summer months.”
Molendyk said the detachment will be monitoring the roadways throughout the summer to try and keep everyone safe.
