Duncan dentist Scott Stewart has been honoured with a Distinguished Service Award at the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C.’s annual awards ceremony in Vancouver on March 17.

The award is presented to individuals who have made outstanding and broad contributions to CDSBC over an extended period of time.

Stewart has been a member of the college’s professional conduct committee for many years, and has served as a chairman of its inquiry committee.

“I’m flattered,” Stewart said from his Duncan office.

“I’m just doing my bit for dentistry to be a self-regulating profession.”

Top 20 Under 40 recognizes two Cowichan Valley business owners

Two young entrepreneurs from Duncan were recognized at Vancouver Island’s Top 20 Under 40 Business and Community Awards, held in Nanaimo on Saturday.

Genevieve Grieve, owner of EK Hair Design, and John Close, owner of Lush Eco Lawns, were among the 20 business people picked for 2016 from across the Island.

More than 150 nominations were received for the annual event, now in its fourth year.

“We are very proud to have created an event that honours the exceptional young business professionals under the age of 40 who are outstanding leaders in their chosen fields and are shaping our local community’s future,” said event chairman Roger McKinnon.

Duncan London Drugs store celebrating huge recycling success

The London Drugs store in Duncan has had great success since it launched its “What’s the Green Deal?” program in 2008 and began tracking all its waste disposal.

The store has seen a 95 per cent waste-diversion rate in 2015 through committed and aggressive recycling initiatives in the program, which has seen London Drugs partner with provincial waster-stewardship programs.

“In 2015, we saw an increase in the amount of recyclables brought to London Drugs resulting in 11,533,000 pounds of waste diverted from the landfill (from all of our stores),” said Clint Malhman, the company’s CEO.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our customers and staff in Duncan for our combined waste-diversion achievement for 2015.”
