Early morning fire forces neighbours out of Orillia Street homes

No occupants inside Saanich house which sustains an estimated $50,000 in damage

The Saanich Fire Department was called out to a fire at a home on the 3000 block of Orillia Street shortly after midnight Friday.

First arriving crews witnessed flames and smoke showing from the rear of the single-level residence,” according to a release from Capt. Rob Paton.

Saanich Police arrived at the home first and confirmed it was unoccupied.

Police were able to evacuate the surrounding homes and the Saanich Fire Department managed to suppress the fire. The fire was contained to the rear of the home and no one was injured.

A search of the home revealed the fire had spread to a small area in the attic, which was also extinguished.

The initial response of 18 firefighters, three engines, one ladder and one rescue vehicle was able to quickly knock down the majority of the fire.

The house sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage. The cause of the fire is unknown and still under investigation, as arson was not ruled out.
