It will be a celebration of the environment as the municipality of Summerland holds Earth Week and Earth Day events later this month.
The ninth annual Earth Week will run from April 16 to 22, concluding with the 12th annual Earth Day Celebration on Sunday, April 22.
“One of the key objectives of Summerland’s Earth Week celebrations is to raise awareness and inspire environmental action,” Mayor Peter Waterman said. “The Earth Week celebrations are family events, and we hope that all residents will participate and realize they can make a difference for the environment.
Activities during the week include a recycling roundup, a beach and shoreline cleanup at Powell Beach, the unveiling of a new cycling map and repair station and an energy efficiencies tour of the Summerland Arena.
The Earth Day Celebration will be held Sunday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Adams Bird Sanctuary on Peach Orchard Rd.
The Earth Day event is hosted in partnership with the Summerland Environmental Science Group and the Okanagan and Similkameen Invasive Species Society.
“This is the second year we are focussing on this conservation area,” said Lisa Scott, one of the Earth Day coordinators. “Last year, may participants said it was the first time visiting the sanctuary and they were amazed at the diversity of plants and birds.”
A clean-up of the area will include removing invasive plants and planting native trees and shrubs.
Those attending the Earth Day event are asked to bring their own shovels and rakes. Free gardening gloves will be provided to the first 30 volunteers.
