East Kootenay Traffic Services of the RCMP is asking all motorists to reconsider plans to drive on East Kootenay Highways as a severe winter storm is making travel hazardous. The traffic unit has been attending collisions throughout the day involving all manner of vehicles including commercial transport trucks. All major highways are in poor driving condition with built up snow reducing lane width. Visibility is limited and reports of freezing rain have been received in the Creston and at the Roosville and Yahk border crossings. Secondary highways may not be plowed as the main highways are the priority.
If you do not have to travel please stay home. If you are forced to travel you are reminded to use your headlights to increase your visibility to other drivers and to slow drown and drive to the conditions. Nobody should be travelling at 100 Km/h in these conditions. Reasonable and prudent drivers are driving well below the posted speed limits.
