Economic development office returning to city hall

Williams Lake city council is bringing its economic development office back to city hall.

Two years after creating the arms-length Central Cariboo Economic Development Corporation, Williams Lake city council is bringing its economic development office back to city hall.

The move comes after Susan Fornier, hired in March 2016 as the newly-formed corporation’s economic development officer, resigned her position in January to return to work in Ontario, said Mayor Walt Cobb during last Tuesday’s regular council meeting.

“We have decided to bring the economic development office in-house and will be looking for a replacement for that position,” Cobb said.

Thanking the 10-member volunteer board for its hard work, Coun. Ivan Bonnell said economic development is still on council’s radar.

Council resolved to dissolve the board and appointed Bonnell, along with Councillors Craig Smith and Jason Ryll as directors for the interim.

Cobb said Fornier has agreed to continue helping the city during the transition period.

In January 2015, the economic development officer position at city hall was one of eight positions eliminated by the present council to save money.
