ELECTION 2014: Shaw broadcasts special mayoral debate in Port Alberni

Shaw and 93.3 PEAK FM teamed together to record a mayoral debate using a panel of journalists' questions.

Shaw TV will broadcast a special mayoral candidates’ debate starting tonight (Monday, Nov. 3/14) at 7 p.m. on Shaw TV Channel 4 and running five more times between now and Nov. 13.

Last week Shaw and 93.3 PEAK FM invited all seven mayoral candidates—Maurice Chopin, John Douglas, Kevin Wright, Cindy Solda, Hira Chopra, Mike Ruttan and Jacques Savard—to field questions from a journalistic panel comprising David Wiwchar, news director at the PEAK; Susie Quinn, editor at the Alberni Valley News, and Eric Plummer, a reporter at the AV Times. The event was taped at city council chambers and moderated by Mark Hanley.

Jacques Savard was the only candidate who did not attend the meeting.

The journalists asked a series of questions they had collectively decided upon ranging in subjects from taxation and cutting costs at the city level, to watershed protection, infrastructure and tourism to leadership challenges.

Repeat airings take place Nov. 4 at 1 p.m., Nov. 6 at 5 p.m., Nov. 8 at 10 a.m., Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. and Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.

Shaw also invited all candidates running for municipal office to deliver a two-minute message to their cameras, and 44 of 47 answered the call. The mayor and councillor messages will run tonight (Nov. 3/14) at 9 p.m., Nov. 5 at 7 p.m., Nov. 8 at 12 p.m. and Nov. 12 at 9 p.m., according to Shaw’s Darren Evans.

School trustee and Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District director messages will run Nov. 4 at 9 p.m., Nov. 6 at 8 p.m., Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. and Nov. 13 at 5 p.m.
