Election 2015: Local residents groups will host candidate forum

All-candidates meeting set for 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 29 at Lochside elementary school, 1145 Royal Oak Dr.

Residents in the Saanich Gulf islands riding will have an opportunity to hear from their candidates in the upcoming federal election later this month.

Cordova Bay, Blenkinsop Valley and Broadmead Area community associations have organized an all-candidates meeting for Sept. 29 at Lochside elementary school.

“We want to give our community members an opportunity to hear from the candidates, and the opportunity to pose some questions,” said Larry Gontovnick, vice-president of the Cordova Bay Community Association.

He said the forum might be the best venue for many residents to be able to meet the candidates in the Oct. 19 federal election.

“Some don’t like to come forward and ask questions but they like to hear what other people have to ask and what the answers are,” said Gontovnick.

Conservative Robert Boyd, the NDP’s Alicia Cormier, Tim Kane of the Liberals and Green Party MP Elizabeth May have all confirmed their participation in the forum. Each candidate will have five minutes for introductory comments, which will be followed by a series of six set questions for each candidate before the meeting is opened to questions from the floor.

“I think it’s important that they have an opportunity to hear from the candidates and see how they differentiate from each other and how they address the important issues that confront us,” said Gontovnick.

The all candidates meeting is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 29 at Lochside elementary school, 1145 Royal Oak Dr.
