The polls have now closed, and soon Surrey-Cloverdale voters will have a new MLA representative. There are four candidates on the ballot: Marvin Hunt (BC Liberals), Aleksandra Muniak (BC Greens), Peter Poelstra (BC Libertarian) and Rebecca Smith (BC NDP).

Surrey-Cloverdale Riding Results
Marvin Hunt (BC Liberals): 47.98 per cent
Rebecca Smith (BC NDP): 38.56 per cent
Aleksandra Muniak (BC Greens): 12.33 per cent
Peter Poelstra (BC Libertarian): 1.13 per cent
Surrey-Cloverdale riding history
Surrey-Cloverdale has been a Liberal riding since its creation in 1991. Liberal MLAs Ken Jones held it from 1991 to 1996, Bonnie McKinnon from 1996 to 2001, and Kevin Falcon from 2001 to 2013.
Stephanie Cadieux was the most recent Liberal MLA to hold office. She won the last provincial election in Surrey-Cloverdale with 60 per cent of the popular vote, defeating runner-up NDP candidate Harry Kooner by 8,272 votes.
Cadieux is running for the Surrey South riding in this year’s election, and Liberal candidate Marvin Hunt, who served as the Surrey-Panorama MLA until the Legislative Assembly was dissolved on April 11, will take her spot on the ballot.
Green candidate Aleksandra Muniak, a local small business owner and long-time Cloverdale resident is in the running, as is Libertarian candidate Peter Poelstra, a university student who grew up in Cloverdale.
NDP candidate Rebecca Smith is executive director of the Surrey Hospice Society and was also executive directors of the BC Psychological Association. Smith ran federally in 2015 in Cloverdale-Langley City, and earned 15.65 per cent of the vote.
Changes to the Surrey-Cloverdale riding
A lot has changed for the Surrey-Cloverdale riding since the 2013 provincial election.
Geographically, the riding has been halved and moved northwards. The new riding includes parts of what formerly belonged to the Surrey-Fleetwood and Surrey-Tynehead ridings to the north.
Surrey-Cloverdale, according to most recent available figures, has a population of 59,649 and now covers 55 square kilometres. The average age of its residents is 37.3 years old and for 29 per cent of its residents English is their second language.
