Despite a current swing back toward summer weather, coat season is approaching fast.

So the Rotary Club of Parksville AM, Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise and the Ballenas and Kwalicum secondary school leadership classes are collecting Coats for Kids.

The annual volunteer-driven effort aims to unite unused winter clothing with the people who need it.

According to Rotary, Coats for Kids is “an opportunity for you to clean out your closets and make a much needed donation of gently used coats and winter accessories like scarves and gloves to the folks in our community who could really use them to keep warm this winter.”

Organizer Cara MacDonald said they distributed around 100 coats to families last year and they hope the local community will continue to make it the success it has been for almost 20 years as one of the club’s longest running projects.

People can drop off new or clean, gently used coats and winter accessories until Wednesday, Oct. 14 at any District 69 school and a long list of businesses and public locations including: Parksville Kiddie Kollege, Marlin Travel, Parksville Library, Coastal Community Credit Union, Close to You Ladies Fashions, Island Cleaning Supplies, Vancouver Island Insurance Centre (QB), Suds & Duds Laundromat, any grocery store, or any Qualicum Beach bank branch.

The coats will then be distribution free to those in need Oct. 17, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Society of Organized Services (SOS) main building, across from the thrift shop, and the Errington Hall at 1390 Errington Road.
