Enderby is taking a wait and see approach over Ironman Canada and Vernon’s possible bid to host the 2013 race.
Council will send a letter to the City of Vernon wishing them luck with their bid, but will wait and see if Enderby is involved in the race, which consists of a 3.86-km swim, 180.25-km bike ride and a 42.2-km run.
“If they win the bid and Enderby is maybe somewhat involved in some fashion, like say the running or biking routes, and what the financial consideration might be, to let us know,” said Enderby Mayor Howie Cyr. “We just didn’t have the appetite to just say, ‘well we’ll support it and we’ll pay for some of the stuff’ when we don’t know what the heck it is.”
The City of Vernon has three route options proposed but only one that would see the race come near Enderby, and that would be on the outskirts only during the cycling discipline.
In the proposed option, Ironman participants travel on their bikes on a route that would take them through Salmon Arm and onto Highway 97B out to Deep Creek Road, which borders Enderby, then to Spallumcheen before heading into Armstrong and back onto Highway 97A into Vernon.
