Smokers will have to walk a little farther if they want to light up in Enderby.

On Monday, council adopted a bylaw that would ban smoking within six metres of a playground, instead of the current three metres.

When asked if he’s received any complaints about the new rules, Mayor Greg McCune said, “I haven’t heard one thing — not a peep.”

McCune says most smokers are responsible and respect the rights of non-smokers.

“They do their best effort to get out of people’s way.”

Council decided to toughen up the rules in playgrounds after a survey on smoking canvassed 113 residents.

The results showed that 84.1 per cent wanted smoking banned near playgrounds while 69 per cent don’t want it on beaches.Of the 20 smokers surveyed, 55 per cent supported some form of regulations in parks.

Seven per cent of all respondents stated smoking should be allowed in all locations.
