Enderby politicians believe opportunities may be right under their noses.
Mayor Howie Cyr says that while the Vitalization Initiative is focusing on bringing tourists to Enderby, he says there are about 7,000 people living in the broader community.
“What can be done to promote shop local?” he said.
Cyr says he supports attracting tourists to the community, but he says economic opportunities can also be derived from residents already living here.
“There is strong research that shows that if you (businesses) carry what people want at a reasonable price, they will shop local,” he said.
Shuttle proposed
There are plans for a private service that links Okanagan communities.
Kamloops Transportation has asked Enderby council to support a shuttle service between Salmon Arm and Kelowna.
“On a trial basis, we will pick up in Salmon Arm at 7 a.m. and then leave Kelowna for Vernon, Armstrong, Enderby and Salmon Arm at 5 p.m.,” said Abdul Rasheed, president.
However, Enderby council has not given support at this point and has referred the matter to the Interior Local Government Association.
“We already have transit we’re paying into and we don’t want to water down that service and reduce ridership,” said Mayor Howie Cyr.
Kamloops Transportation must submit its proposal to the B.C. Passenger Transportation Board.
