Island Health may be sending an engineer to Port Hardy to take a look at traffic flow around the Hardy Bay Seniors Society and health centre. The Society has expressed concern about the potential for accidents in the area due to increased traffic since the health centre was built. As a result, the District asked that a traffic flow study be done by Island Health.
At the Operations Services Committee meeting May 16, Councillor Pat Corbett-Labatt said Island Health came back with a recommendation to close the driveway at Granville Street and have a two-way flow in and out of the driveway closest to the seniors centre, off Beverly Parnham Way. The seniors society fears this would also create a safety issue.
Corbett-Labatt said Alison Mitchell of Island Health was present at a recent event and saw first hand the amount and flow of traffic in that area. She recommended removing some blockages around the seniors centre to create a one-way traffic flow.
At their regular council meeting June 14, Corbett-Labatt said “it looks like they’re going to have an engineer go up and look” at that option.
