ESQUIMALT-SAANICH-SOOKE: Randall Garrison takes win for fourth mandate

Liberals projected for minority government

  • Sep. 20, 2021 12:00 a.m.

NDP incumbent Randall Garrison swept the Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke riding Monday night with 42.6 per cent of the vote.

He held a steady lead all evening over Conservative Laura Frost and Liberal Doug Kobayashi, who were in a tight race for second and third place. Tuesday morning, with all but one of the riding’s polls reporting, Frost and Kobayashi remain separated by only 55 votes. Frost sits in a narrow second at 21.6 per cent, just above Kobayashi at 21.5 per cent.

Green candidate Harley Gordon takes fourth place with nine per cent of votes, while People’s Party of Canada candidate Rob Anderson has 4.8 per cent.

Randall took the largest election-over-election gain of the night, drawing an impressive 8.6 per cent more of the vote than he did in 2019, when he won 34 per cent. Conservatives and Liberals remained fairly steady, coming in a few percentage points over their 19 per cent and 18 per cent of 2019, respectively.

The biggest drop was for the Greens, who plummeted 18 per cent from their second place spot in the last election, falling from 27 to nine per cent.

The People’s Party of Canada, meanwhile, more than doubled its vote count moving from just two per cent in 2019 to 4.8 per cent Monday night.

Elections Canada says voter turnout for the region is sitting at 57.3 per cent, or 58,856 of 102,679 registered voters. There is a total population of 120,834 people in the riding.

The Canadian Press is projecting the Liberals have won enough seats to stay in power with a minority government but have fallen short of winning a majority.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will need the support of at least one other party to maintain a minority government.

Officials will begin counting mail-in ballots on Tuesday. Elections Canada says voter turnout was 58.4 per cent.
