Wilfred Stijger of the Netherlands took home top prize in the solo division of the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition on Sunday in Parksville.
Stijger’s creation of children in boxes pretending to fly hit a chord with the judges and the competitors — he won top prize in both. The sculpture is named Up.
The team of Susanne Ruseler of the Netherlands and Ilya Filimontsev of Russia also took home the top prize from both the judges and competitors for their Guardian Angels creation.
The theme this year was Things With Wings.
The public can view all 22 of the sculptures every day until Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Parksville Community Park.
