Downtown Vernon is revving into gear to flood the main drag with engines and entertainment for all.
The Watkin Motors Sun Valley Cruise In will draw over 100 cars to downtown Vernon Aug. 6.
Main Street (30th Ave) will be lined with beautiful cars including street rods, classics, customs, vintage cars and more from 4 to10 p.m.
“The Cruise In in Downtown Vernon is more than just cars” said Holly Schmidt, events and marketing manager for the Downtown Vernon Association.
“It’s a night of entertainment and dancing as well.”
Classic rock band Mace performs throughout the night on the main stage, Clay Stenberg brings his Tribute to Elvis act at 7 p.m. and there will be numerous competitions to take part in.
“It’s a fantastic free event for the entire family” adds Schmidt.
Other activities include a sidewalk sale with many Downtown Vernon merchants, The Raggedy Rollers will be back handing out snacks from KT’s Heritage Restaurant and the Silver Star Royalty will be serving up A&W floats at the A&W Malt Shoppe. Okanagan Entertainment DJ, Chad Berger, will also be mixing some fantastic music at the event.
Additional activities include a hula hoop competition at 5:45 p.m., twist competition at 6:45 and limbo competition at 8:45.
“The competitions are a great way for the public to get involved in the event and we look forward to seeing some great talent,” said Schmidt.
The Cruise In in Downtown Vernon is just a portion of the two-day car show.
The cars begin Aug. 6 with a morning poker run for registered cars, then cruise in downtown.
They will also be available for viewing Aug. 7 in Polson Park from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Motorists are reminded that 30th Avenue (from the 2900 block to the 3400 block) will be closed starting at 1 p.m. Aug. 6 and will remain closed until 11:30 p.m. because of the event.
Any cars still on the street at 1 p.m. will be towed at the owner’s expense (to make way for a much nicer car to park there).
