The Big Eddy Bridge is closed after a small excavator being carried on the back of a truck hit the struts holding the height limit sign, causing it to crash and damage the bridge.
The incident happened sometime Saturday morning when a flat bed truck attempted to cross the bridge from east to west. However, the excavator was sitting too high and hit the portal strut, causing it to fall off the truck and crash into the side of the bridge.
The crash caused visible damage to the bridge, putting a big dent in the strut that holds the height limit sign and breaking some of the side beams.
There is no word on how long the bridge will be closed for.
Mike Thomas, the City of Revelstoke’s director of engineering, said they were waiting on an assessment from a structural engineer before re-opening it.
The bridge is open to pedestrians, but drivers are asked to detour via the Trans-Canada Highway.
