Drivers and parents are reminded to be cautious next Tuesday as students head back to school for another year.
“We’re encouraging parents to review the rules of the road with their children and go over their daily route to and from school,” said ICBC local road safety coordinator Kate Woochuk.
“Drivers should expect more traffic and watch for children, especially in or around school zones.”
School begins on Sept. 6, and with the change, school zone speed limits are back in effect.
The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are asking drivers to be aware of increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic and to give themselves a little more time to get wherever they are going that day.
“All area school zones are marked by signage with the limits expected to be adhered to and the hours that they are in effect,” Cpl. Krista Hobday said. “School buses are back on the road as well and drivers are expecting motorists who share the road to obey signals regarding no passing when red lights are flashing.”
The volunteers of the Cowichan Community Policing team and the North Cowichan/Duncan detachment Crime Prevention Unit and Uniform Division will be stepping up and monitoring as many local school areas as possible to help ensure everyone gets to where they need to be safely, Hobday added.
“We are hoping everyone is excited about going back to school, not just the Traffic members and parents,” she said.
