Expect traffic delays between Telkwa and Smithers airport

Paving work underway with single lane alternating traffic

  • Aug. 26, 2020 12:00 a.m.

Paving operations on 26.6 kilometres of Hwy 16 from six kilometres west of Smithers to Telkwa is ongoing.

As of Thursday morning the active zone was approaching Lake Kathlyn Road just west of Smithers with the westbound lane closed.

Drive BC advises travellers to expect delays of up to 20 minutes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily as stretches of road are taken down to single lane alternating traffic.

The $3.6 million project is expected to be completed by the end of September.

The contractor, Peter Bros. Construction, is using a technique called hot-in-place recycling, where the top layer of asphalt is heated, reprocessed and then deposited to replace the original layer.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says the method is “quick and cost-effective” and will make the drive “safer and smoother for travellers.”
