Sooke RCMP are on the lookout for counterfeit money after receiving five complaints from local businesses in the past month about fake $100 bills.

The circumstances of how the bills were circulated is unknown. The money was discovered at local banks after being deposited, said Sooke RCMP Staff Sgt. Jeff McArthur.

“We expect more of these counterfeit bills to be passed in Sooke in the upcoming weeks,” McArthur said.

The fake bills were replicated to look like the new polymer banknotes. For more info on how to easily detect a counterfeit, go to bankofcanada.ca.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 250-642-5241 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
