Early this morning, just before 1 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, West Shore RCMP responded to a call about two youths carrying weapons down Goldstream Avenue, only to discover that the weapons were fake.
Police recieved a call from someone saying they had seen two males, one with a long sword and the other with a machine gun. Police stopped the pair on Aldwynd Road, near Goldstream, without incident.
The one 17-year-old Langford resident had a scabbard, just over one metre in length, that turned out to be a blunt practice weapon. His 18-year-old friend, also from Langford, carried a paint ball gun designed to look like an assault rifle.
“Police want the public to understand that calls like this are taken very seriously by police,” stated an RCMP press release. “Police officers responding to a call involving a gun do not have the luxury to assume the gun is a toy. Until proven otherwise officers must treat the threat of potential harm and risk to the public as real.”
Considering the time of night and the similarities the reproductions had to real weapons, police said it’s lucky that the incident ended so peacefully.
