Six people are temporarily displaced from their duplex home after a tree crashed down on the house Monday.
The incident happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. when homeowner Crystal Carmel was preparing for a vacation next month.
“I was in the bedroom packing for my trip and I a big crash,” Carmel said. “I thought it was an earthquake. I came out and saw a large crack in my living room ceiling.”
Roots of a large maple tree behind the home, located on a steep slope at 5285 Toms Turnabout, in the Hammond Bay area, gave way. The tree crushed a portion of the roof next to a B.C. Hydro power connection to the home. A B.C. Hydro crew was called in to disconnect power to the building to prevent chance of a fire from damaged wiring.
Carmel was was the only resident home at the time. She, her daughter and husband, a downstairs tenant and a couple living in the other half of the duplex are displaced until repairs are made and power can be restored.
No one was injured and residents are insured.
