Family, IHIT ask for public’s help after 2018 Surrey shooting death

Sumeet Randhawa was killed in the Oct. 11, 2018 incident

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and the family of a man killed in a 2018 shooting in Surrey are asking for the public’s help for information to solve the crime.

Sumeet Randhawa, 30, was shot on Oct. 11, 2018, according to a release from IHIT Thursday (Oct. 8). IHIT said he died at the scene.

The incident was “targeted and associated to the Lower Mainland gang conflict,” IHIT said.

Sumeet’s sister, Sabreen, made a public appeal Thursday, asking if anyone has any information about the incident to reach out to IHIT.

“Why would someone want to take such a beautiful soul, who would want to do such a terrible thing. we cannot sleep, we cannot figure out how to go on,” Sabreen said.

“We cannot rest until there’s justice for Sumeet. We cannot feel at peace while his murderer walks free. We cannot stand by and watch these murderers inflict the same pain on other families.”

Sabreen said the family woke up that day in 2018 ready to celebrate Sumeet’s birthday.

“Two years ago, on Oct. 11, 2018, our family expected it to be a wonderful day,” she said.

“The youngest of our family was to turn 30. He was supposed to celebrate his big day surrounded by the people that he loved. Instead, the people he loved stood around his home in complete shock, waiting for the first responders to tell us Sumeet was alright, but that moment of relief was never felt by Sumeet’s loved ones.”

Sumeet was shot and killed in the driveway of a home in the 6700-block of 130th Street, just before 2 p.m. on Oct. 11, 2018.

A few days later on Oct. 17, police released footage of the Hummer, and the focus following close behind.

Occupants of a black Hummer H3 and a blue Ford Focus were “quickly identified as being involved in the homicide,” according to IHIT.

Detective Lara Jansen, with IHIT, said the Hummer was found “just a couple of blocks away from the actual crime scene.”

She added that “evidence was obtained” after searching the vehicle.

The Focus, she said, has yet to be found.

Now, nearly two years later, police say investigators need the public’s help.

“We believe there are people who have information that will help us. We are appealing to those people, and to the friends and close associates of Mr. Randhawa to contact IHIT,” said Jansen.

“It is never too late to do the right thing.”
