On April 24 at approximately 7:15 p.m., the Golden-Field RCMP were advised of a two vehicle collision on Highway 1 approximately three kilometers east of Field, B.C.

RCMP from Golden and Lake Louise initially responded to the collision along with CP Police Service, BC Ambulance and Parks Canada Fire-Rescue crews. The RCMP Trans Canada East Traffic Service, along with a RCMP Collision Reconstructionist from Calgary, then attended and completed the investigation.

“At this time we believe that the eastbound vehicle failed to negotiate a curve striking on oncoming westbound vehicle.” stated Golden-Field RCMP spokesperson, Cst. Spencer Lainchbury.

The driver of the westbound vehicle a 32 year-old from Calgary was treated by paramedics, and released, however the passenger, a 37 year-old male also from Calgary, was pronounced deceased on scene.

The driver of the eastbound vehicle, a 33 year-old male believed to be from the Salmon Arm area, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Calgary by STARS Air Ambulance, and is expected to survive.

“We are continuing to investigate, but believe that speed and alcohol likely contributed to the collision.” advised Cst. Lainchbury. “We will likely be forwarding charges for Impaired Driving causing Death against the driver of the eastbound vehicle.”

Highway 1 was closed in both directions at Golden and Lake Louise for several hours to allow police to complete their investigation, but has since been re-opened.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision, who have not already spoken with police, contact Cst. Trevor Skappak with the RCMP East Kootenay Traffic Services Unit at 250-344-2221.
