A 44-year-old Chilliwack man died Monday due to “severe head injuries” sustained in a motorcycle accident last Friday.
Police said the unidentifed man was wearing a helmet, but a warning message inside it alerted users that it was “not a safety helmet and does not meet standards.”
“It is not for use when riding any street or off road motorized vehicle,” the message continued.
Police said the man lost control of his motorcycle and was unable to stop when traffic slowed while he was travelling with a group of motorcycles on Hwy 1 at McCallum Road.
A 57-year-old Langley man has also died after crashing into his wife’s motorcycle on Hwy 99 in Porteau Cove Saturday at about 12:30 p.m.
Police said the man was attempting to pass another vehicle and catch up with his wife, but she was slowing down at the time and the two motorcycles collided.
“There is little forgiveness or room for error when you are riding a motorcycle,” RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said in a news release.
“It is vital that (motorcyclists) are alert to what is going on around them, and that they wear approved helmets,” he said.
The third weekend fatality occurred Saturday when a 20-year-old man was riding an ATV on the West Harrison Forest Service Road at about 4:30 p.m.
“He failed to negotiate a turn, ran off the service road and down an embankment,” Thiessen said.
The unidentified man was pronounced dead on the scene.
Thiessen urged everyone driving all terrain vehicles to train with a reliable instructor.
“I don’t know if this particular young man had taken any courses, but it can only help make you safer on these vehicles,” he said.
