A 37-year-old man died in a house fire on Mitchell Road in Pitt Meadows on Tuesday.
An elderly man was rescued from the two-story house and taken by ambulance to Ridge Meadows Hospital, where he was treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation.
“I believe he is doing well,” said Pitt Meadows fire chief Don Jolley.
An elderly woman and her two grandchildren, a young boy and a girl, were also home at the time of the fire, but were outside when fire crews arrived, around 5 p.m.
Jolley said the elderly man was standing, but disoriented and surrounded by smoke in a downstairs hallway when firefighters pulled him from the home.
A younger man who Jolley said has been identified as an acquaintance of the family was found in a downstairs bedroom where the fire originated.
He has been identified by the B.C. Coroners Service as Christian Johan Serdar.
Jolley said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The home did have smoke detectors, he added, but they were not functioning.
“Fire crews did an outstanding job containing the fire to that room.”
