Fate of Vernon Recreation Complex uncertain

High repair costs forcing politicians to consider options

Conditions at the Vernon Recreation Complex have local politicians scrambling.

Some Greater Vernon Advisory Committee members are suggesting the cost of a new building should be investigated after being told Thursday that almost $2 million in repairs are needed at the current facility, which includes the indoor pool, Dogwood Gym and auditorium.

“It’s a little disturbing to see where it’s falling apart,” said director Mike Macnabb.

“We will have to look at the foreseeable life of the structure.”

Among the repairs needed is $1.7 million because an undersized dehumidification system has led to damage to the roof and walls of the pool, while incorrectly installed heating lines in 1965 are falling apart.

A special meeting will be held in Janauary to discuss the situation further.
