The local MP is not impressed with the federal government’s record to date.
Summer recess is now underway, bringing an end to the spring session in the House of Commons.
“Some of it was undoing the good work we did in the last 10 years,” said Mel Arnold, Conservative MP for North Okanagan-Shuswap, when asked about the Liberal government’s activities.
As an example, Arnold says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his caucus reversed former Conservative tax credits for youth sports and culture.
“They say they are looking after mid-level taxpayers but we don’t see that,” he said.
Arnold was also opposed to the government’s right to die legislation.
“We will probably see court challenges over it,” he said. “The big thing lacking is protection for health institutions over conscientious objection.”
Arnold is already starting to hear some speculation about the Liberal agenda once Parliament resumes in the fall. Among them is the Paris Agreement on climate change.
“The commitments they made will see a decrease in income for Canadians,” said Arnold, adding that he also expects a national defence review.
Arnold will be busy while back in North Okanagan-Shuswap for the summer.
“We are planning a slate of events and tours. I hope to get out to the communities and meet with people,” he said.
