Fernie local Mike Delich received the Canadian Snowsports Association’s Dee Read Memorial Award in recognition of his commitment to the industry as an International Ski Federation (FIS) Technical Delegate (TD) – a position Delich maintained for 24 years alongside his work as a Start Referee and member of the FIS Jury at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

“Mike has always been unfaltering in his support for athletes, coaches, and officials” said Doug Campbell, FIS Alpine TD Commissioner for Canada.

“Mike was a key player helping and encouraging the training of new officials. He is always thoughtful and as the father of two daughters, recognized as an advocate for women in sport. He gave generously of his time to the sport of alpine ski racing while always being humble, professional and maintaining the highest standard of officiating for Canada.”

Delich began his involvement in snowsports when competing for the Red Mountain Racers while growing up in Rossland, B.C, eventually transitioning to assist with athlete development at Fernie Alpine Resort.

Delich also worked as Chief of Race for World Cup events and for the men’s speed events in the 1988 Olympic Winter Games, later serving as board member for the Alpine Canada Alpin and chair for British Columbia Alpine Ski.

Many of the athletes Delich coached have went on to fulfill successful careers in ski racing, competing in World Championships, World Cups, and at the Olympics. Delich’s daughters have raced for the Canadian Alpine Ski Team and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

“In my mind’s eye, when I see and think of Mike Delich, I see a great and honourable gentleman who always had a swarm of children around him on the ski hill and a broad smile on his face,” said Canadian Team alumni, Dee Dee Haight.

“Truly committed to bringing out the best in people, Mike provided leadership and wisdom while at the helm of B.C. Alpine…His legacy in our sport and the people he touched has been rich and generous.”

The Dee Read Memorial Award is awarded annually in honour of the late Dee Read, a Canadian snowsports athlete, coach, and one of the first women to be designated as a FIS TD.
