The review of the Coastal Ferry Act will be out in just over two weeks.? The review is being conducted by the BC Ferry Commissioner Gord Macatee. The BC Ferry Commission is independent of the BC Ferries Services, Inc. with a commissioner appointed by the province, and regulates BC Ferries fares and service levels.Mr. Macatee visited coastal communities, including four on Haida Gwaii, in August, where he met with stakeholders and the public. The commissioner also published nine papers discussing the issues being reviewed and gave BC residents the opportunity to respond up until early December. The papers reviewed the principles the commission uses to regulate ferry operation, including that it use a commercial approach and that routes should move towards being self-supporting. All of the papers are available at the Ferry Commission website, but the commission is no longer taking comments on them. Mr. Macatee said the review is now in the writing phase, and is due Jan. 24.
