The Comox Valley Amateur Radio Club is having a field day, and anyone with any interest in amateur radio operations is invited.
The field day will take place at Kin Beach on June 28, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the shelter with the barbecues.
There will be some HF (high frequency) rigs with antennas that will be supported by the nearby trees, as well as some VHF (very high frequency) and some UHF (ultra high frequency) handheld radios on display.
“The idea of a field day is to experience the setting up of radio communication systems out in the open country in case of an emergency or in our case here, perhaps an earthquake,” said field day organizer Morris Thompson. “The operators of the systems try to contact as many other stations as they can and of course log all the contacts in the club’s log books.
“We are also working on setting up what is called a Fox Hunt. In this particular exercise a small transmitter is hidden in the area and sends a short signal out every 30 seconds and then the members of the club and their guests try to find the transmitter using direction sensitive antennas.”
There will be a barbecue, with refreshments.
“I would like to have response from all those planning to attend and the number of guests so I can make sure no one goes hungry or becomes dehydrated,” said Thompson. “We are looking forward to a fun day with our members and guests ‘interested in radio’ to enjoy the day with us.”
