DELTA — One man is dead and a section of Highway 99 is closed after a firey crash near the Delta works yard Wednesday morning.
Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sarah Swallow said the truck, which was carrying a load of sand, was travelling south on the highway when it lost control and hit the center median just past the Highway 17A exit. The truck burst into flames.
The driver was declared dead at the scene.
A northbound van was also affected by the crash and the driver of that vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Highway 99 is currently closed in both directions between Highway 17A and Highway 10. The closure will likely remain in place for some time as officers investigate the crash and the scene is cleared.
Swallow said it’s unknown at this time when the highway will be reopened and recommends commuters plan an alternate route home.
Drivers making their way into and out of Ladner can still enter and exit Highway 99 via Highway 17A.
Swallow said that Highway 17 access onto the 99 is not affected by the closure.
"We just want to thank everybody for their assistance and patience," she said.
