The final phase of the Kicking Horse Dike Improvement project is underway as of today, April 6, with crews back on the ground since construction halted for the winter in December.
Construction is expected to take place six days a week, Monday through Saturday, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.
As part of the construction, the parking lotson the north and south side of the alley will be closed.
Crews will be onsite to finish backfilling the alley and replace riprap along the river, before proceeding to start on the landscaping and beautification elements of the project.
The project seeks to improve the dike and reduce the risks of river flooding, while also transforming the riverfront space between downtown and the Kicking Horse River.
This project is funded through the Federal Gas Tax Fund as administered by the Union of BC Municipalities and represents the largest infrastructure grant the Town of Golden has ever received at $5.87 million. The Town received the grant in March 2018.
Over 65 per cent of this amount has been allocated for this specific area with the rest being used to heighten dikes elsewhere in the community.
The beautification component, valued at approximately $1 million is being funded through the Resort Municipality Initiative, according to the Town website.
The project is set to be completed by July of this year.
Construction has been ongoing since October 2019.
