Financial assistance available for those affected by flooding last week in Fraser Valley

Up to $300,000 per claim available through provincial Disaster Financial Assistance program

Residents affected by overland flooding from the heavy rains that began last week are now eligible for Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) from the provincial government.

DFA is available to homeowners, residential tenants, small business owners, farmers, charitable organizations and local government bodies who were unable to obtain insurance to cover these disaster-related losses.

Those affected in the Fraser Valley Regional District and six other districts in the province are eligible.

All First Nations communities, electoral areas and municipalities within the geographic boundaries of these regional districts are also eligible to apply for assistance.

Financial assistance is provided for each accepted claim at 80 per cent of the amount of total eligible damage that exceeds $1,000, up to a maximum claim of $300,000.

A homeowner or residential tenant must show that the home is their principal residence.

Seasonal or recreational properties, hot tubs, patios, pools, garden tools, landscaping, luxury items (such as jewelry, fur coats and collectibles) and recreational items (such as bicycles) are not eligible for assistance.

Applications for this DFA event must be submitted to Emergency Management BC (EMBC) by April 4, 2020.

British Columbians can access the DFA application online: www.gov.bc.ca/disasterfinancialassistance.
