Yet another suspicious fire was ignited in the BX early Friday morning, right in the fire department’s backyard.
A row of cedar hedges were engulfed in flames at a Silver Star Road home, just across the street from the BX-Swan Lake fire department and BX Elementary.
Crews were called out to the incident at 1 a.m. Friday, which they were able to quickly extinguish.
But the incident has sparked further concerns at the department.
“It’s definitely suspicious,” said chief Bill Wacey, who didn’t find any evidence.
Despite being right off Silver Star Road, Wacey doesn’t believe a discarded cigarette butt could have caused the blaze.
“Flicking it, especially at that time of night…it takes more to start.”
Although a majority of the hedges were dead, the fire consumed a 60 foot portion of hedges and also scorched a large pine tree.
This is the latest in a string of suspicious fires in recent months in the BX.
“That puts it at eight or nine,” said Wacey.
Although there were some kids in the area, Wacey says they are not suspected and he commends them for their quick action.
“Somebody saw the flames so they ran down and phoned it in,” said Wacey, adding that the group proceeded to watch crews douse the fire.
