Fire burns the inside of fifth wheel at Nanaimo campground

Firefighters responded to the alarm at Westwood Lake Campgrounds shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday

A fifth wheel trailer interior is a blackened ruin following a fire in Nanaimo on Wednesday morning, March 14.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue responded to the alarm at Westwood Lake Campgrounds on the 300 block of Westwood Lake Road shortly after 6 a.m.

Firefighters doused the blaze, but the unit’s interior was heavily damaged.

Kevin Lillingston, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer who was investigating the fire, said in an e-mail that the unit was unoccupied when the fire broke out and that burn patterns indicated the fire started in a wall electrical outlet that an oil-filled portable heater was plugged into.
