Fire destroys home

A family escaped serious injury after a fire destroyed their home on Maki Road in Lake Country

A family is safe in a Kelowna hotel and escaped serious injury after a fire destroyed their home on Maki Road in Lake Country Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 7 p.m. Tuesday after the fire was sparked in a downstairs bathroom. After first attempting to put the blaze out themselves, including hitting it with a fire extinguisher, the family escaped as the blaze spread quickly.

A four-man crew from the Carr’s Landing fire department was first on the scene. Two members entered the house to try and control the blaze, but it escaped into the ceiling and burned out of control.

Deputy fire chief Brent Penner said the fire does not appear suspicious and the cause appears to be incense burning in the bathroom.

Fire and insurance investigators continue to investigate the cause while the family of four is being housed in Kelowna under emergency social services care.
