No one was injured, but a workshop in the Stories Beach area was completely destroyed by fire Tuesday evening.
At 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 7, crews from both Campbell River fire stations were dispatched to respond to a reported fire in a workshop on a large property in the 3900 block of South Island Highway.
“On arrival, crews confirmed there was a heavy smoke issuing from the roof area of a 30- by 40-foot, two-floor structure. Shortly after fire suppression operations commenced, a large portion of the upper floor and the roof collapsed. The partial structural collapse combined with the multiple on-site hazards significantly increased the risk to the firefighters,” says Deputy Fire Chief Chris Vrabel. “An excavator, provided by a local contractor, was called in to assist with the operation by pulling down the remaining portion of the roof structure and removing debris from the initial collapse, which assisted firefighters in completely extinguishing the blaze.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
