A September 19 press release from Sgt. Darryl Little of the Kootenay Boundary Reg. Detachment indicates that the “The Grand Forks RCMP is currently investigating a fire that caused extensive damage to the Grand Forks City Hall, early this morning.”
The press release states that alarms were responded to at about 5:30 this morning, and when police and firefighters arrived the first floor of the building was on fire.
“The fire department was able to extinguish the blaze, however, significant damage was caused to the entire first floor. Arson investigators are en-route to the scene, in an effort to determine the cause of the fire, however, at this time it does appear suspicious.”
“A person of interest has been taken into custody and members of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment General Investigation Section will be speaking to him about the incident. The City Hall is a two storey building so a structural engineer may need to be consulted to determine if it is safe to enter. No injuries were reported.”
