Fire in an old Canfor mill kiln

The Houston fire department fought a fire in one of the old Canfor mill kilns on Oct. 17.

Fifteen firemen fought a fire in one of the old Canfor mill kilns on Oct. 17.

The crews that were demolishing the old kilns did the safety checks and did everything right, but something was smouldering in the kiln wall and it caught fire after crews left, said Matt Franks, Houston Canfor spokesman.

The fire department was called in at 7:02 p.m., just an hour and a half after the demolition crews left, and spent the next four hours fighting the fire, said Fire Chief Jim Daigneault.

“It was a bit of a challenge in some ways because the back of the building was being torn down, so we couldn’t get access from the back side,” Fire Chief Daigneault said.

The fire didn’t cause any loss to Canfor, because the kilns were being demolished anyways, said Franks.

But Franks says the quick response and hard work from the fire department is a service that was much appreciated.
