As of noon on Thursday, June 15, all fires except campfires were banned within the Kamloops Fire Centre, which stretches from the north end of Wells Gray Park to the U.S. border.

Previously, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires were allowed in the former Clearwater Forest District (now Kamloops Fire Zone north) above 1,200 metres.

Category 2 and Category 3 burning activities include the burning of more than two open fires of any size at the same time, stubble or grass fires of any size over any area, the use of fireworks or burning barrels of any size or description and the use of binary exploding targets.

The prohibition does not ban campfires smaller than a half-meter high by a half-meter wide and does not apply to gas, propane or briquette cooking stoves.

The prohibition will remain in effect until Oct. 15 or until further notice.
