As of July 28 the Kamloops Fire Centre had responded to 94 wildfires consuming 211 hectares. This is well below the 10-year average of 297 wildfires burning a total 2,864 hectares. There were no wildfires of note.
While this does represent our slowest season since 2001, conditions are beginning to become dryer and we do not forecast significant rainfall throughout most of the fire centre over the next few weeks. With this in mind, we ask both our industry partners and the public to remain vigilant when in the backcountry.
As we began the August long weekend, wildfire management staff were closely monitoring the weather conditions and have resources available to respond to any incidents that may occur.
As of July 28, the Wildfire Management Branch had sent six waves of personnel to Ontario to assist with fire fighting efforts in the northwestern part of that province. Currently on deployment are 532 of our staff, including more than 100 from the Kamloops Fire Centre.
