The inaugural Mission Firefighters Fire Truck Pull took place on Saturday as 14 teams battled it out for fun and bragging rights.
The event pitted each team, many of which showed up in elaborate costumes, against each other to see who could pull a fire truck in the fastest time.
In the end, the Mission Saints – a team of local, non-firefighting residents – took home top prize.
Mission firefighter Todd Earnshaw organized the event and was pleasantly surprised by the huge response it received.
“Everybody seemed to have a great time,” he said.
Hundreds of people came out to watch the event, which was held in front of the Mission Fire Hall on Seventh Avenue.
While an official total has yet to be calculated, Earnshaw said more than $9,000 has been raised for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, making it one of the most successful fundraisers he’s ever organized.
Earnshaw was looking for a different way, other than the annual boot campaign, to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy, and the truck pull seemed like a family-friendly was to support a good cause.
The positive response has ensured that a second annual event will take place.
Other winners at the event included the “Vinions” squad, who won best costumes. The group of Emergency Services employees were dressed in Minion T-shirts, from the popular children’s movies.
The Honeybadgers, an all-girls squad, raised the most money, bringing in $785.
