Police are reminding hunters it’s illegal to leave firearms in view in their vehicle.
It’s also not a good idea when thieves abound.
An Enderby RCMP officer responded to a report Saturday shortly before 8:30 a.m. of a theft from a vehicle in the area of George Street and Regency Avenue.
“The owner reported his truck had been broken into overnight, and his rifle was stolen,” said Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.
A 308 Browning Rifle with Leopold VX Scope in a soft case was stolen.
As it is hunting season, the RCMP and conservation officers are reminding all of the hunters that it is illegal to leave a firearm in plain view in a vehicle even if it has a trigger lock (this, said Molendyk, falls under the Criminal Code so it is a court offence).
“This is a reminder to all hunters and gun owners to store your firearms safely at all times,” said Molendyk.
“We also want to remind all vehicle owners to not leave any valuables in plain sight in your vehicles as thieves are always looking for the crime of opportunity to steal these items.”
