Grass fire breaks out in wooded area with knee-high grass

Neighbours and firefighters didn’t waste any time extinguishing a blaze in Vernon’s Bella Vista area Tuesday.

The fire broke out on a hillside of trees and grass on Tronson Road, near Bella Vista Road, just after 2:30 p.m.

Residents initially tackled the blaze with garden hoses and then members of the Vernon and Okanagan Landing fire departments arrived.

“If the trees had started candling, it could have been a far different situation,” said Jack Blair, Vernon deputy fire chief.

“Conditions are still far from favourable. The ground and grass are still very dry,”

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
