First College celebrates grand opening in West Kelowna

A new West Kelowna private college plans to offer education in vocational, technical and career training.

A new West Kelowna private college plans to offer education in vocational, technical and career training through diploma programs and specialized short courses.

Gary Zvanovec, admissions and marketing manager, said courses range from diplomas programs in business management and business administration to shorter courses such as heavy equipment operator and non-destructive testing.

First College is also expecting to offer personal courses such as “true colours” and “seven habits of highly effective people.”

“We are targeting anybody who is passionate about making a life change,” said Zvanovec.

“Whether they’re 18 years old and coming out of high school, or 55 years old and wanting to make a change in their life or simply learn something.”

First College will likely begin some of its programs later this summer; Zvanovec said the school’s capacity is likely about 600 students.

A large part of the college’s philosophy is the importance of gaining practical job experience during the education process.

“Our platform is built on partnerships. Right now we have at least 75 partnerships,” said Zvanovec.

“Through those partnerships, now we can identify what the employer is looking for—we can say, we’ve got this person, coming out of this course, and they’re ready to work for you.”
