Flood closes Blind Bay Road

Flooding in the Shuswap covers beaches and closes roads

The Blind Bay Marina and a section of Blind Bay Road are shut down due to high water levels.

The Blind Bay Marina and a section of Blind Bay Road are shut down due to high water levels.

Blind Bay residents are watching Shuswap Lake as rising lake levels have meant the closure of one road and high water is affecting waterfront homes.

Residents are building up sandbag barriers in hopes that they will be able to protect their houses from any further harm.

Blind Bay Road will remain closed from Centennial Drive to Marine Way until the water level goes down as it is not passable by vehicle at this time. Residents can still access the Trans-Canada Highway through Balmoral Road, Centennial Drive and Cedar Drive.

The Shuswap Emergency Program is advising people to drive slowly on other water-filled roads.

The public is still being advised to stay off local lakes unless it is an emergency situation.

Debris, both floating on top and below the water surface, poses a serious threat to boaters, and the increased water levels may cause damage to existing docks.

Reports have also been coming into the Emergency Operation Centres, of boaters creating wakes which are breaching protective barriers.
