Food bank filling up for Christmas

The Sooke Food Bank is filling up nicely thanks to two major food drives in the last two weeks, organizers say.

Last weekend’s Sooke Fire Rescue Santa Run brought in thousands of dollars worth of food items, along with the previous week’s 10,000 Tonight food drive at EMCS, as well as consistent donations from Sooke residents to the Christmas Bureau.

Food is coming in by the tonnage, putting the Sooke Food Bank in good standing for 2017, said Mike Thomas, Sooke Christmas Bureau co-chair and a Sooke Food Bank volunteer.

“We’re receiving some very generous donations from the citizens of Sooke, the firefighters did a great job, and the schools are doing a great job, the whole bloody town is going a good job,” Thomas laughed.

The District of Sooke donated $7,000 to the Christmas Bureau this year, which Thomas said is enough for hams, turkeys and other groceries, allowing them to have a “nice hamper for everybody.”

Torrential cold rain and wind didn’t stop firefighters on Saturday night from collecting food throughout Sooke either on the fill-a-fire truck run.
